The Law Office Project

For the past two years I have worked on what I call The Law Office Project. The Law Office is located in Soulard which is an area of St Louis, Mo that was the landing place for new to St Louis immigrants in the 19th  and early 20th centuries.
The buildings The Law Office occupies were originally residential spaces. They were renovated and have been used for commercial spaces for many years.
My work for The Law Firm has been about furnishings and lighting for the reception area, conference rooms and the owner’s meeting rooms.
The design for The Law Firm is about scale and proportion, using pieces that work in rooms that were originally meant to be someones home. It is also about textures. The textures used were important in creating the look and feel of the updated spaces.

The first area I worked on was the reception area. An accent wall, zebra pattern covered chairs and contemporary art gave the space an updated, sophisticated look. To complement the existing style I added a traditional tan settee and two preppy plaid chairs.

The next area was the second floor conference room, where the mix of textures was an intricate part of the design. When I arrived the room was furnished with a sisal rug, wood planked industrial style table and Eames molded side chairs. To complete the room I added the Armillary light from Currey and Co and arm chairs upholstered in a wide wale navy blue corduroy,

The wood floors, trim and metal staircase add to the mix of textures and add interest to the design of The Law Office.

It’s all about the textures.

In the first floor conference room I used a chenille hounds tooth fabric for the arm chairs, a tan and cream striped wool rug and mercury glass pendant lights. The smooth wood table is from Restoration Hardware and the Eames molded chairs in blue complete the group. The aged wood floors and exposed brick remind you of the age of the building.

The owner of The Law Office has a suite of rooms that includes a sitting room. The fireplace is original, the blue built in bookcases are a recent addition. The comfortable Jules chair and ottoman are from Hickory Chair.

To balance the setting and add another texture I used the Monaco chair from Bungalow 5 and covered the seat with Osborne&Little’s Brodie fabric from Nina Campbell.

The Monroe sofa, also from Hickory Chair, has a French Moderne style. The tight back gives it a sleek appearance and the full seat cushions and rich blue velvet fabric add the needed comfort. A hand knotted wool rug from Kravet softens the look and the sound in the room.

The meeting is a more private space. To furnish it I used four chairs, a large tufted ottoman covered in a Ralph Lauren wool plaid fabric, a wool area rug with a leather border and two glass and chrome side tables. The original fireplace and wood trim sets the tone of the room and balances the look of the new furnishings.

In the conference room for this area I used the Mazatlan outdoor chair from Palecek with and the wood planked industrial table. The more casual design for this conference room includes a vintage sideboard and original art done by a friend of the owner.

The view in spring from the back of the building shows the charm of the Soulard area, a beautiful building in a beautiful area.
